Drum, Dance and Play!
This workshop will focus on ways to establish a positive learning atmosphere that will enable and encourage students to work to their potential in playing, creating and extending musical compositions. We will work with hand drums, pitched and unpitched percussion and other surprises. Special attention will be directed toward the process including suggestions for classroom management and student accountability.
Chris Judah-Lauder teaches middle school music at Good Shepherd Episcopal School in Dallas. She has served on the AOSA board as regional representative, local conference chair and is the National Conference Co-Chair for the 2009 AOSA Professional Development Conference in Milwaukee. She is an active clinician for in-service staff developments, Orff Schulwerk chapters and State Music Education Conferences. Chris has thirteen publications and is published in The Echo, Reverberations, and the MENC journal. Chris teaches Levels at Trinity University (San Antonio) and Vander Cook University (Chicago) and has presented at seven National Orff Conferences.
All IOSA workshops held at Forest Glenn Elementary in Lawrence Township.
Registration for the workshops begins at 8:30AM and the workshops begin at 9:00AM. They last until 1:00 PM.
In this workshop we will explore the way songs can be used as vehicles for developing musical, cultural, and intergenerational understanding in our students. In so doing we will sing, play, move, create, and think in the spirit of Orff Schulwerk. These active-based experiences will serve as examples of the ways songs can serve as the conceptual and thematic nucleus of a music curriculum.
Carlos Abril is Associate Professor of Music Education at Northwestern University’s Bienen School of Music, where he teaches courses in general music methods, multicultural music education, and philosophy of music. He has taught children (pre-school-6th grade) in Florida, Ohio, and Illinois. Most recently he served as director and teacher for the Global Music Workshop, an after school music program for “at-risk” children in Chicago. Carlos has presented sessions throughout the United States, as well as in Spain, Italy, and Southeast Asia. He co-edited the recently published book, Musical Experiences in Our Lives (2009). His music arrangements and instructional materials are published by World Music Press and appear in the Macmillan/McGraw-Hill textbook series, Spotlight on Music.
